Motoring Beauty Hints

The Vanity Case has a new mascot. Her name is Queenie and she is 54 years old. I havent met her in person yet but I have it on good authority that she is still sprightly.

Isn’t she pretty?

So I thought that I would post a few motoring beauty hints from a 1930’s photoplay magazine, entitled..
“Some suggestions from the stars on how to look your best in front of the traffic cop”.

First up from Anita Page..

“Anita Page drove her car home from the beach and the sand on her shoes got in the gears. The repair charge was $25. For 25 cents she bought this shoe brush and attached it to the running board.”

Genius Anita!

“The battery that starts Norma Shearer’s motor also curls Norma’s hair. This curling iron saves the trouble and expense of sending a hairdresser on location trips. Norma also finds it convienient after a game of golf or tennis. When not in use it hooks on the dashboard, but while still hot should not be confused with the brake”

And finally my favourite..

“A powder box, not to be used in heavy traffic, is concealed in the steering wheel of Barbera Kent’s car. When the box is closed the horn will honk.”

I think a Besame compact would be perfect for this.

Disclaimer.. The Vanity Case will not be held responsible if any accidents happen after modifying one’s car to meet one’s beauty needs.

Two extra patterns..

There has been a fair few knitters sign up for the Pin Up knitting challenge,  most favoured patterns so far have been Martha and Dolly.

I have had a special request for a sock pattern – I think a couple of girls have a very cheeky idea in mind for these.. so to oblige I present “Cable Socks from 1941”

Maybe not quite as long as you had hoped but I sure you can improvise.

Also I spotted this little beauty and couldnt help but add her – I have no idea how she got missed first time around.

Introducing “Debbie” in a spectacular sailor jumper.

If you want either of these two please email me thevanitycase@vodafone.co.nz

Happy knitting!

Pin Up Knitting

Two of my favourite things are Pin Up’s and making things. So you can imagine my delight when I found an enormous stack of 1940’s and 1950’s knitting patterns at the local op shop.

Its getting cold now in Wellington, New Zealand and a lot of my friends are crafty wee things so to officially open my new blog site I thought I would run a competition..

A Pin Up Knitting competition.

For an EPIC prize.. A Besame Pin Up makeup essentials pack ( powder compact, mascara and Red Velvet Lipstick)  plus “Retro Makeup” by Lauren Rennells. Worth $180

What do you have to do to win this prize?

Knit, thats what!

I have picked out some patterns, some are easy peasy, some are more tricky, all are super retro cool. Email me the name of the pattern ( I have given them Pin Up names) and I will send you a pdf.

Knit up the pattern and take a photo of yourself, in the item, in Pin Up fashion. You can mimic the photo on the pattern or do something wild and crazy, its up to you.

The photos will be posted on this blog and the viewers will choose the winner, based on the coolness of the finished item and excellentness of the pin up pose/photo.

The competition is open to absolutely anyone, anywhere. The photo must be sent into me by the 1st August (that gives you almost 2 months to knit like a maniac).

Here are the patterns.. Firstly we have “Virginia” up top, with a 1940’s plain jumper with a choice of long or shortsleeves. Followed by (a slightly scary looking) “Dolly” in a quick to knit up chunky cropped cardigan.

Image

Then we have in glorious technicolour.. “Doris” in a “super fast to knit” sweater on the top and Katherine in a lovely  shaped 1950’s top (and great pearls!)

Image

here comes a buxom “Martha” in  a cute cardigan and below her is “Amy” in a Bolero – wouldnt that be great for over a pin up dress? The pattern says that an average knitter could finish this in less than a week.

Image

And finally, if all those seem too hard you could try these hats. “Mabel”‘s one up top is a real 50’s one and “Gloria” down bottom is a “Baker Boy Beret”  – fur trimmed no less!

So email me at thevanitycase@vodafone.co.nz for your pattern and please share this post with anyone who might be interested. Happy knitting!

Here I Am!!

Well after a few hours of figuring out how to import, export and generally fiddle around with blogger and wordpress I have finally figured out how to move my blogger stuff to this new WordPress site.

Phew!

This is a new look blog with a bit of a new focus.. I will be posting lots of vintage hair and makeup tutorials, information and articles. All my old posts are here (miracles do happen!) and I managed to get rid of the very scary message that said “You were never here” .

Stand by for my first post..
